Unverified Claims

Which would you trust more? Self-issued claims or unverified claims?

    Is this some sort of trick question? OK, I’ll take the bait.

    It depends.

    What do I have at risk if I rely on this claim? Does the claimant have a motivation to lie? Will the claim be verified anyway in “the natural course of events”? Have I already verified the claim previously? If I am at risk, has the claimant assumed liability? If I am at risk, will I be able to track someone (subject or claimant) down and recover damages if the claim is false? And so on …
