{"id":2013,"date":"2019-10-10T16:56:51","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T23:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/self-issued.info\/?p=2013"},"modified":"2019-10-10T16:56:51","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T23:56:51","slug":"using-openid-connect-self-issued-to-achieve-did-auth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/self-issued.info\/?p=2013","title":{"rendered":"Using OpenID Connect Self-Issued to Achieve DID Auth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"plain\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" alt=\"OpenID logo\" src=\"https:\/\/self-issued.info\/images\/openid-logo.png\"><\/span>My co-authors and I recently competed the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/nbviewer.jupyter.org\/github\/WebOfTrustInfo\/rwot8-barcelona\/blob\/master\/final-documents\/did-auth-oidc.pdf\">Using OpenID Connect Self-Issued to Achieve DID Auth<\/a>, which was created as a result of discussions at the eighth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weboftrust.info\/\">Rebooting the Web of Trust<\/a> workshop.  The paper&#8217;s abstract is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nProving control of a DID requires proving ownership of a private key corresponding to a public key for the DID. Of course, this could be done with a new DID-specific protocol. However, standard protocols for proving ownership of a public\/private key pair already exist.<\/p>\n<p>This paper describes how to reuse the Self-Issued OpenID Connect (SIOP) specification and related protocol messages to prove control of a DID. It describes both why and how to do this. Related topics, such as release of claims, are also touched upon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Several people came to the workshop wanting to explore how to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/openid.net\/specs\/openid-connect-core-1_0.html#SelfIssued\">OpenID Connect Self-Issued OpenID Provider<\/a> functionality to prove control of a <a href=\"https:\/\/w3c.github.io\/did-spec\/\">Decentralized Identifier (DID)<\/a>, including myself.  The paper describes the approach being taken by a number of groups using DIDs, including Microsoft.  The paper&#8217;s publication is timely, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/2019\/did-wg\/\">W3C DID Working Group<\/a> has just formed to create a DID standard.
