Press Coverage Generated by Restoration of the First Smiley :-)

After a significant effort to locate it, on September 10, 2002 the original post made by Scott Fahlman on CMU CS general bboard in which the smiley :-) was invented was retrieved by Jeff Baird from an October 1982 backup tape of the spice vax (cmu-750x), just in time for the 20th anniversary of the post on September 19, 2002.  This page contains links to some of the press coverage that this computing archaeology success created.

Much of the press coverage was derived from this summary note with the original post and thanks to those who helped retrieve it.  Also, see Scott's page about the smiley.  To see the post in context you can read the "joke" thread on the bboard that led to the invention of the smiley.
